    New approaches for the acquisition, systematisation and interpretation of archaeological artefacts

    Abstract :

    The work of archaeologists is generally based on the classification of archaeological artefacts. Amongst all observable intrinsic descriptors (material, decoration, fabrication mode/chaine operatoire, etc.), shape is often considered as the most important feature, giving clues to study chronological, social, religious or cultural aspects of ancient populations. Although ceramic classifications are well elaborated nowadays, they are sometimes considered as being subjective, ambiguous, non-reproducible, and seldom implemented. The main goal of the dissertation is therefore to bridge the gap between archaeology and recent developments in mathematics, statistics and 2D/3D imagery, in order to (semi-)automate the process of artefact acquisition, classification and attribution. The thesis is composed of an introduction, followed by three chapters presenting the methods proposed here to simplify several key tasks necessary for artefact illustration, identification, reconstruction, and interpretation. The remainder of this volume is composed of three chapters presenting case studies dealing with the shape-based classification of different types of artefacts, followed by a general conclusion discussing the importance of geometric morphometrics for archaeology. Although the dissertation focuses only on selected artefacts (mainly ceramics, bronze axes and brooches) from several chronological periods (Neolithic period, Bronze Age, La Tène period), the methodological processes used to deal with specific questions can easily be generalised and adapted, for the study of a wide variety of archaeological artefacts.
